A Note on Freedom Camping in Napier

A Note on Freedom Camping in Napier

While freedom camping in Napier is a popular and unique way to experience the city’s natural habitat and electric atmosphere, there are some important rules and guidelines set by the Napier City Council that you must follow. We’ve broken these down into simpler language below to help you make sure you aren’t accidentally breaking any of these rules and can plan an enjoyable freedom camping adventure.

  • Park Only in Designated Areas: Make sure to park your campervan only in the areas designated for freedom camping, which we have listed above. This helps prevent overcrowding and ensures that everyone has access to these spots.
  • Use Facilities Responsibly: In areas where facilities are provided, such as toilets and waste disposal points, you must properly dispose of your waste and keep the area clean and tidy.
  • Respect the Environment and Community: Be mindful of the local environment and the communities around you, and avoid making excessive noise and follow any additional local regulations.
  • Do Not Exceed Time Limits: The Napier City Council also enforces a maximum stay of two consecutive nights in most designated freedom camping areas, with the only exception being the BMX Pump Track Carpark, which allows stay for up to three nights. This rule helps manage the availability of spots and ensures that everyone has the chance to enjoy these beautiful locations, and if you wish to stay longer in Napier, you’ll need to move to another designated area or explore local campgrounds and holiday parks.

It’s also important to note that freedom camping is not permitted in any of the following locations:

  • The Westshore Foreshore Reserve
  • The CBD
  • Marewa
  • Taradale and Tamatea Shopping Districts

Each of the freedom camping locations we’ve detailed above offers a truly unique way of exploring Napier, from beachfront activities to scenic coastal views. But, you do need to be in self contained vehicle in order to camp in these spots. So, contact the team at Travellers Autobarn today to discuss your campervan hire needs and we’ll make sure you’re fully prepared for your exciting adventure through Napier. We even provide unlimited mileage with all of our rentals, so there’s no need to feel restricted as you journey through this beautiful area.

Freedom Camping in New Zealand – Important Information

While freedom camping in New Zealand is undeniably one of the best ways to see everything this beautiful country has to offer, there are some important things you need to know.

  1. Almost all freedom camping sites are only suitable for self contained vehicles, and hiring these can be 10%-40% more expensive compared to non self contained vehicles. This is something you’ll need to think about when planning your budget.
  2. Freedom camping sites typically have very limited amenities (some even have none at all), and even during the summer, temperatures can fall as low as 0°C overnight.
  3. Most freedom camping sites operate on a first-come-first-served basis, so there can be a certain level of stress when trying to find a space.
  4. Department of Conservation (DOC) campsites allow you to extend your stay beyond the usual limit as long you have a DOC Campsite Pass. Many people find these hugely beneficial, and for as little as $95 per person, you can stay for up to 30 nights.
