Head to the west coast of New Zealand’s south island, and you’ll find Fox River; a place where nature’s raw beauty takes centre stage. There’s loads to explore here, from rugged landscapes to serene rivers and beach views, making it a must-visit destination for anyone wanting to embrace the great outdoors.
One of the best ways to experience this little slice of paradise is through freedom camping – a unique, budget-friendly way to travel that allows you to park up in a designated area, relax, and immerse yourself in the surroundings. But, before you hit the road, it’s important to know where you’re legally allowed to freedom camp in and around Fox River.
That’s what we’re going to be looking at today, along with a break down of the local bylaws and rules, making it easier than ever to plan your freedom camping adventure while staying within the regulations.

Fox River Freedom Camping Area
Fox River, Buller District
If you’re looking for the real freedom camping experience, the Fox River Camping Area is as authentic as it gets! This is a simple, dog-friendly site with access to public toilets, and you can camp here for two consecutive nights in any calendar month. It is a small site, though, with just five designated freedom camping spots offered on a first-come-first-served basis, so we recommend arriving early to grab a space.
This area is not just about camping; it’s also a gateway to some incredible natural attractions. You’re just a stone’s throw away from the famous Fox River Caves, a must-see for anyone visiting the area and renowned for their impressive limestone formations, making them favourite among spelunkers and nature enthusiasts alike. The nearby coastal walking tracks also offer stunning views of the rugged West Coast and are ideal for both short strolls and longer hikes.

McMillan Road Freedom Camping Area
Punakaiki, Buller District
This is a great freedom camping site if you’ve been craving a hot shower, as this, along with access to drinking water, is one of the amenities on offer here. There aren’t any toilets, but since only self contained vehicles are allowed to camp here, this isn’t the biggest issue. In terms of rules, you can stay for up to two consecutive nights in a calendar month and must park in the designated areas, of which there are five in total.
McMillan Road is located in a more forested area, offering campers a lush, green environment surrounded by native bush, and the entire area is incredibly peaceful, with the sounds of birds and the wind rustling through the trees as your only companions. This makes it an ideal spot for those who want to feel more connected to the land and enjoy a bit of solitude. It’s also only a 17-minute drive from the Fox River Freedom Camping Area, so it’s a great alternative if you can’t find a space there.

The Strand Freedom Camping Area
Reefton, Buller District
Slightly further out in the town of Reefton, The Strand Freedom Camping Area offers a slightly different vibe compared to the more remote Fox River and McMillan Road sites. Here, you’ll find yourself in a historic town with a rich gold mining past, which adds an extra layer of intrigue to your camping adventure.
You’ll have access to public toilets here, and like the other freedom campgrounds in Fox River, you’re limited to a maximum stay of two nights per calendar month. It is, however, a very convenient option if you want a break from cooking in your campervan and would like a night in a bar or restaurant. Likewise, it’s a great place to spend the night before restocking on supplies and hitting the road again for the next leg of your adventure!

A Note on Freedom Camping in Fox River/Buller District
Freedom camping in New Zealand is a privilege, and with that comes the responsibility to follow local rules and regulations imposed by Buller District Council to protect the environment and ensure that everyone can enjoy these beautiful locations. The Buller District, where Fox River is located, has specific bylaws and guidelines that all freedom campers must adhere to.
Here’s a quick rundown of the need-to-know information about freedom camping in the Fox River area:
- Self-Contained Vehicles Only: All freedom camping areas in the Buller District require you to be in a certified self-contained vehicle. This means your vehicle must have an onboard toilet, fresh water storage, and waste disposal systems.
- Respect the Environment: Practice responsible freedom camping by always leaving your campsite as you found it, or better. This means taking all your rubbish with you and disposing of it responsibly, not disturbing local flora and fauna, and avoiding lighting fires unless permitted.
- Parking Regulations: You must only park in designated areas. Even though freedom camping allows for a certain level of flexibility, it’s important to stick to the areas that are marked or designated for camping to avoid fines.
- Stay Limits: Most sites have a maximum stay limit of two nights, and this ensures that everyone has a chance to enjoy the camping spots without overcrowding. You must not outstay these limits, as this can result in fines or future bans.
- Local Bylaws: Always check for the latest local bylaws and guidelines before setting up camp. The rules can change, and it’s your responsibility to ensure you’re compliant.

Freedom Camping in New Zealand – Important Information
There’s no doubt that freedom camping is one of the best ways to see everything New Zealand offers. However, there are some important things to note before you head out on your adventures:
- Freedom camping sites are usually only suitable for self contained vehicles, and the hire price of these can be between 10%-40% more expensive than non self contained vehicles. So, this is something you’ll need to factor into your budget.
- While freedom camping sites offer beautiful views in remote locations, their amenities are normally very limited. Also, even during the summer, night temperatures can fall as low as 0°C.
- Most freedom camping sites don’t have a booking system, and, as such, spaces are offered on a first-come-first-served basis. This means finding a spot can be quite difficult.
- Camping areas that are certified DOC (Department of Conservation) allow you to extend your stay for up to 30 nights as long as you hold a DOC Campsite Pass. These are massively useful for frequent freedom campers and cost as little as $95 per person.
